What does HR Do?

Human Resources (HR) management ensures that an organization functions effectively and efficiently. These HR functions are often categorized into two main areas: strategic and operative. While strategic HR focuses on long-term planning and shaping the overall direction of HR within an organization, operative HR functions are more concerned with day-to-day activities that keep the workforce engaged, motivated, and productive.

1. Hiring and Onboarding
The hiring and onboarding process is the first point of contact between an organization and a potential employee. It is a crucial operative function involving attracting, selecting, and integrating new talent into the company. HR professionals are responsible for crafting job descriptions, posting job openings, conducting interviews, and ultimately selecting the right candidates.

2. Training & Development
HR departments are tasked with identifying skill gaps within the workforce and designing training programs to address these deficiencies. Training can take many forms, including workshops, online courses, and mentorship programs.

3. Employee Retention
HR professionals work to create an environment where employees feel valued, engaged, and motivated to stay with the company. This involves monitoring workplace satisfaction, addressing concerns, and developing strategies such as employee recognition programs and competitive compensation packages to reduce turnover.

4. Feedback
Regular check-ins, surveys, and suggestion boxes are some tools used to collect and act on employee feedback. This function helps address concerns, improve processes, and foster employees’ sense of belonging and empowerment.

5. Performance Appraisal
Performance appraisals help identify areas where employees excel and areas needing improvement. They also play a pivotal role in compensation decisions, promotions, and career development planning.

6. Actionable HR Insight
HR departments collect and analyze data related to employee performance, turnover rates, recruitment metrics, and more. This data helps organizations make informed decisions about HR strategies and policies.
