There are thousands of applications, out of which only a few are selected, so make sure you make them feel worthy of their decision.
Interviewers are likely to ask this question of you to check the clarity in your mind as well as the importance of the opportunity they’re serving you.
In these situations, you have to reply wisely.
Here is what you can say:
📌 Sample 1: laid off
“In my last role, due to the sudden hardships that my company faced, I and many of my colleagues were laid off. Although I am grateful for the time I invested in that company, it gave me opportunities to explore more of its skills and test my knowledge in different dimensions.”
📌 Sample 2: you wanted to change your career
“I left my previous job as I realized that the position I was working in was not serving me as my true passion relies on the field of writing. I always wanted to pursue writing but could not, as post-college I decided to go with the respective placements.
Now I am ready to pursue this field and would feel fortunate enough to work with your company.”
📌 Sample 3: lack of opportunities
“I felt that the management in my previous company could not serve my ambition to test my abilities to an advanced level. Hence, I felt stuck in terms of learning, so thoughtfully, I decided to quit my previous job.”
In the crux, you have to make sure:
👉 You are being honest without saying anything wrong about the company.
👉 You are also communicating your expectations to the company.
👉 You are highlighting that you were not empty-handed after you left the company. i.e., skills and experiences.
