Negotiation is a method by which people resolve differences. It is a process by which arguments and disputes are avoided and compromises or agreements are reached.
In any conflict, individuals aim to achieve the best possible outcome for their position (or perhaps an organization they represent). However, principles of fairness, seeking mutual benefits and maintaining a relationship are key to a successful outcome.
Certain forms of negotiation are used in many situations: for example international affairs, legal systems, government, industrial disputes or domestic relations. However, general negotiation skills can be learned and applied in a variety of activities. Negotiation skills can be very useful in resolving any differences that may arise between you and others.
