When you don’t know what to say in an interview

Sometimes, you may not know how to answer a question in a job interview.

And you’ll be surprised to know that HR doesn’t even expect you to answer every question perfectly.

Instead, they want you to be honest.

However, just saying ‘I don’t know’ without any explanation might not be the best approach.

So, here are five ways to handle the situation:

✅ Sample 1 (Shows motivation)

Thank you for asking that question. I’m not very familiar with this topic, but I’m committed to researching and learning more about it.

✅ Sample 2 (Shows you’re a fast learner)

I don’t have an exact answer at the moment, but I’m confident in my ability to learn quickly. With your guidance, I’ll be able to pick it up in no time.

✅ Sample 3 (Best for technical questions)

I can’t think of an answer right now. Can we revisit this question later? I’d like some time to think about it.

✅ Sample 4 (If you don’t understand the question)

I’m sorry, I didn’t fully understand the question. Could you please simplify it? I want to make sure I answer correctly.

✅ Sample 5 (Redirect the conversation)

While I may not have much experience in X skills, I do have strong knowledge in Y. If the job requires me to learn X, I’m excited to expand my knowledge.

It’s okay not to know everything. Employers appreciate your honesty and your willingness to learn.
