Reasons for performance appraisal

According to Cole (1991), there are several reasons why appraisals are carried out in organizations. These may be summarized as follows:

1. To identify an individual’s current level of job performance.

2. To identify employee strengths and weaknesses.

3. To enable employee to improve their performance

4. To provide a basis for rewarding employees in relation to their contribution to organization goals

5. To motivate individuals

6. To identify training and development needs

7. To identify potential performance

8. To provide information for succession planning.
